The similarity of “chevron” to “chèvre,” the French word for “goat” and our word for a type of cheese that comes from goat’s milk, is no coincidence, as that word derive from “caper” as well.
The National Security Act of 1947 became rule on 26 July 1947. It created the Department of the Air Force, headed in a Secretary of the Air Force. Under the Department of the Air Force, the act recognized the United States Air Force, headed with the Chief of Staff, USAF. On 18 September 1947, W. Stuart Symington became Secretary of the Air Force, and on 26 September General Carl A. Spaatz became the USAF’s first Chief of Staff. 1
At the time of this change from the U .S. Army Air Force to the United States Air Force, the enlisted rank chevrons retained the “Army look.”
